Have you ever wondered if there are special yarns used for crochet swimwear? Well, the answer is yes there is! And I'll share with you all the details about making your first swimsuit or bikini with the best yarns to use - that I have personally tried and tested!
For those who have never worn the "right" crocheted/ knitted swimsuit before, would say that it will sag and carry water weight and fall to your knees!
Yes, I had the same thought too! When I first started making bikinis back in 2013, the first thing I did was to take a shower in one just to test how it would it fair and if it would slide down😅.
Well, It didn't because of a few tips and tricks I learned. Here's what you need to know before making one.
The first and most important thing you will need to know is the yarn type. Yarns used for swimming and lounging would require a thing called Spandex!

If you have never heard of Spandex, Spandex is an elastic synthetic fiber, or also known as Lycra. Stronger and more durable than natural rubber.
Elastane fabric is made of natural and synthetic fibers to provide that stretch and recovery that you need in a swimsuit.
Cool right! That's why this is so important to look for yarns with elastane to maintain the shape and to provide that extra stretch.
But remember not all spandex yarn works the same. It would have to be light preferably below category 3 like a DK or a light weight yarn.
Plus it should also either be either cotton or microfiber. Now, where can I find these yarns you might ask?

Cascade Fixation: Personally I prefer Cascade Fixation yarns and have been using them for years!
They are inexpensive yarns and are easily available here in the States.
I usually get mine directly from the seller (in bulk) or you can also find them on Amazon and on Etsy. It is a DK weight cotton yarn and I would normally use a 2.0 - 2.5mm hook.
Another great thing about this yarn is that they dry fast, don't shrink, don't color bleed and best of all they come in a variety of solid and splash colors! More about cascade yarns here
Alize Diva Stretch: I only recently started using this yarn because they are usually shipped from Europe (for those living in Europe this is a great option ie cheaper shipping!) and takes a while to deliver.
Of course, you find them on Amazon and Etsy which is fantastic! This yarn quickly became one of my favorite yarns to use for summer.
It is a lightweight microfiber acrylic yarn with elastane and the best hook to use would be a 1.5mm - 2.0mm. It is extremely stretchy and it would need some getting used to.
Quick drying, plenty of gorgeous colors and did I mention super stretchy?! LOL. Another great thing about this yarn is that it has a sheer finishing just like a regular swimsuit.
Nako Comfort Stretch: This yarn is very similar to Alize Diva Stretch too. Its composition includes microfiber acrylic with a touch of polyester. It is also a lightweight yarn and super stretchy.
The best hook to use would also be between a 1.5mm - 2.0mm. I've only used them once and since I find them closely similar to the Alize yarn, I would just stick to Alize instead.
It's not readily available here in the States but you can find them on Etsy and eBay as well. And if you're living in Europe, then you're in luck again! 😊
