Today ill be sharing with you my first Fall collection - the Suzette cardigan, a perfect addition to your everyday ensemble. Did you seen the thumbhole sleeves yet?
Here is a little fun fact for you. Did you know a motorcyclist named Chuck Mellon, accidentally stuck his thumb through a hole in his sleeve, then later on, started a business based on it? 👍
That's why I call it the perfect everyday cardigan because it is long and baggy, it runs down till mid-thigh, it comes with pockets and it has sleeves with a thumbhole! I think the only thing missing is a hoodie! What do you think? Should I have added one?

DESIGN INSPIRATION
It's fall and we all need an everyday cardigan. A cardigan that checks all the boxes. So I wanted to create that one cardigan that I could wear over and over again. With just one color block, it comes together with a pretty textured Suzette stitch which makes this cardigan suitable for any attire.
It's long and over-sized, with the added pockets and thumbhole to keep our palms warm. Now that checks off the entire wish list 😊.
I'm using a fingering weight yarn from Hobbii which offers a really nice drape, and loose stitches that will not become overly warm. Check out these 100% cotton yarns from Hobbii, they are always having a great deal!
DESCRIPTION
Worked in 7 separate pieces, the pockets are worked up first which also works great as a gauge swatch. Then the back panel is constructed followed by the front 2 panels. The sleeves are worked up in the end.
For the overall texture, this cardigan uses Suzette stitches, hence the name Suzette Cardigan. And then some simple double crochet and single crochet stitches are added along the edge.
This cardigan is made in group sizes of XS-S[M-L/ XL-2XL/ 3XL-4XL] and can easily be adjusted to fit your preferred size when measured and crocheted along the way. And if you choose to measure along, check out how much yarn you actually need with this yarn calculator here.

Your body measurement:
Group Sizes: XS-S[M-L/ XL-2XL/ 3XL-4XL]
Bust: 30 -34 [38 -42/ 46 -50/ 54 -58]” or 76- 86[96.5 -106.5/ 117 -127/ 137 - 147] cm. If you are in between sizes, size up or measure along.

Suzette Everyday Cardigan with pockets Crochet Free Pattern
PART 1: Pockets
Foundation: Ch 21 + 1, turn [All Sizes]
Row 1: Hdc each St across, Ch 1 turn [21 Sts]
Row 2: Hdc, *[(Sc, Dc) in the next St, Sk 1], Rep [*] until the 3rd last St, Sc, Hdc, Ch 1 turn
Row 3 – 20: Rep Row 2 to for 18 more rows, Ch 1 turn
Row 21: Dc each St across, Ch 1 turn
Row 22 - 23: Sc each St across for 2 rows
Bind off and make a second piece. This works great as a swatch sample to ensure your gauge matches ours. (Measured after and before each HDC stitch)
PART 2: Back Panel
This cardigan has a positive ease of about 6in/ 15cm. Increase or reduce according to your size.
Measure around your largest body area ie Chest or Hips. Then add 12in/ 30cm.
Divide that number by 2. This should be your back panels width.
Now multiply that number with 4. 25 Sts and round it up if needed.
If this number is an even number, add 1. Chain this final number.
ie: Chest (40) + 12 divide into 2, multiply by 4. 25 = 110.5. Round up to 111. I will work with 111 chains.
Foundation row: Ch 99[ 115/ 133/ 149] + 1.
Row 1: Suzette St – On the first St, *[(Sc, Dc) in the same St, Sk 1], Rep [*] until the second last St, Sc on the last St, Ch 1 turn
Row 2: Rep Row 1 for 54 more rows or until you’ve reached your preferred length minus 4in/ 9cm for the bottom border. For ref I am 5’3” (160cm) and this cardigan reaches my mid thigh.
Edging Row: Dc each St across, Ch 1 turn (ref image 1)
Next Row: Sc each St across, Ch 1 turn
Next 2 rows: Work the SZ St across for 2 rows, Ch 1 turn
Next 2 rows: Rep step 4 and 5
Next 6 rows: Rep Steps 4 - 7
Last row: Sc each St across, bind off
PART 3: Front Body Panel
Foundation row: Ch 35[ 43/ 53/ 61] + 1. Based on the number of foundation chains made for the back panel, minus that number with 30 Sts, then divide it into 2. Round it up if needed. If this number is an even number, add 1. Chain this final number. ie: Chain 111 – 30, divide into 2 = 40.5 Round up to 41.
Row 1: Suzette St - On the first St, *[(Sc, Dc) in the first St, Sk 1], Rep [*] until the second last St, Sc on the last St, Ch 1 turn
Row 2: Rep Row 1 for about 30 more rows or until you’ve reached 1/3 of your total length.
Next Row: Dc each St across, Ch 1 turn (ref image 2 below)
Next Row: Sc each St across, Ch 1 turn
Next 2 rows: Work the SZ St across for 2 rows, Ch 1 turn
Next rows: Rep Step 4 - 6 for another 2 more times.
Next Rows: SZ St across for 35 more rows or the remaining number of rows that you have minus 4”/ 9cm for the border.
Last 13th Row: Dc each St across, Ch 1 turn
Next Row: Sc each St across, Ch 1 turn
Next 2 rows: Work the SZ St across for 2 rows, Ch 1 turn
Next 2 rows: Rep step 9 and 10
Next 6 rows: Rep Steps 9 - 12
Last row: Sc each St across, bind off
Make a second front panel. Rep steps 1 - 14
PART 4: Sleeves
Cuffs:
Foundation row: Ch 31 + 1, turn [All Sizes]
Row 1: Sc each St across
Row 2: Sc BLO across, Sc on the last St, Ch 1 turn
Row 3: Rep Row 2 for 29[ 31/ 33/ 35] more rows or until it fits snug around your hand. It should end with an odd number. Ch 1 turn, to the Row side
Sleeve
Row 1: Sc each row across. Ch 1 turn
Row 2: (Increase) Sc and Dc in the first 3 Sts, Sk 1, SZ St across until the last 4th St, Sc and Dc in the next 2 Sts, Sc on the last St, Ch 1 turn
Row 3: SZ St for 7[6/ 5/ 4] rows
Next Rows: Rep Rows 2 & 3 for 47[ 44/ 41/ 38] total rows or until you’ve reached your preferred length.
Fold sleeve in half length wise and place SM along the sides on both panels to align and secure.
Place a SM on the 5th and 10th St from the bottom of the cuff for the thumb hole.
Sc each St across from the last SZ row until the first SM. Slst the next 5 Sts on the panel closes to you. Then Sc both panels Sts across.
Bind off and make a second sleeve
Rep all steps in Part 4. Bind off
PART 5: Assembling
Shoulders
Align the front and back panel together, WS facing out, and Sc each panels St across the top shoulder. Bind off and Rep on the other side.
Turn to the side of the body and place SM along the sides on both panels to align and secure.
Measure 6.3 [7/ 7.2/ 7.9] in / 16 [ 18/ 18/ 20] cm or half the height of your sleeves and place a SM to mark the length on the body panel.
Sc each panels St across rom the bottom up until you reach the SM.
Sides
Turn sleeves inside out and place it inside the body panel, and align the sides together.
Place SM to align in the round.
Sc each St in the round. Slst to join.
Bind off and rep steps 1 – 3 on the other side.
Bind off
Pockets (Switch to 3.5mm hook)
Place the pockets on the front panel, and mark where you would like to attach it.
For ref, I have measured the width of the front panel minus the width of the pockets, divide into 2. This is my center. I have also placed my pockets and on top of the first Dc St row.
Place SM all around to hold in place.
Fold the side and Sc both pieces together across on all 3 sides.
Bind off and rep on the other pocket.
Bind off
Part 6: Front Panel Border
Row 1: On the front Panel (WS), insert hook through the 1st St and Sc each St across the front panel, back neck line and down towards the other front panel, Ch 1 turn
Row 2: Dc each St across, Ch 1 turn
Row 3 – 4: Sc each St across for 2 rows.
Bind off, weave in all loose ends.
