Well let me tell you, there are a few ways you can start a new row in the crochet world, and mine is probably no different. But my way not only prevents gaps at the beginning of each row, but it also looks like a proper stitch rather than a chain.
The secret is to "ONLY CHAIN ONE" 😉

That's all you need when turning to a new row. Just work one chain. Let's say the pattern calls to make 10 half double crochet stitches and 3 rows. I would chain 10 and plus 1 which will be the turning chain.
Insert your hook through the 2nd chain from the hook, and work that half double crochet stitch on that 2nd chain. then continue to stitch across the chain.
At the end of the chain, I would again just chain 1 and turn my work around, insert my hook into the first stitch and work a half double crochet stitch.
I would only chain one when turning to the next row. I would do the same for all single crochet, double crochet and treble crochet stitches as well.
The trick is to pull that first chain a little higher to achieve your stitch height. The only time I do not do this is when the pattern calls for a number of chains that is required for that first turning stitch pattern.
I've been using this method way back when, before I even started writing patterns. So I decided to make a simple video tutorial here to show you how its done.
If you think this way is simpler, do let me know in the comment box below. And if you have any other suggestions, post them down below.
